Tips to Avoid Overeating During the Holidays

November 01, 2016 at 9:39 AM

Diet tips to Avoid overeating during the holidaysThe holidays can be a trial when you’re trying to lose weight. Not only is there a lot of food that may or may not be good for you, but there are also empty calories in the form of alcoholic drinks and sweets. Add that to the fact that you’re more likely to overeat during the holidays and you may just have a recipe for disaster. Fortunately, there are some tips and tricks that you can take with you when it comes to avoiding overeating.

Slow Down When Eating

One of the most important things you can do during the holidays is slow down when eating. Fortunately, it’s easy to do that. Put your fork down between bites, actively engage in conversation with the people around you, and make sure to drink water as you eat. Taking your time will actually allow you to feel fuller and be less likely to overeat. Not only that, but you’ll be able to enjoy each and every bite.

Eat During the Day

When you know you’re going to have a big meal later, there’s the temptation to not eat at all beforehand. Unfortunately, this can backfire. If you’re hungry when you’re presented with a lot of food, you’ll likely eat more of it than you normally would. Instead of starving yourself beforehand, eat a healthy meal and then serve yourself less than you normally would during a large family meal.

Don’t Drink (Too Much)

It’s very easy to drink all of your calories for the day. Cocktails and sweet drinks not only add in extra calories, but often make you more likely to eat more food. When it’s the holiday season, cut back on the sugary drinks. Instead of a fruity cocktail, choose a glass of red or white wine.

Use a Smaller Plate

If you have a large plate during the holidays, then you may be more likely to fill the entire plate—and then finish it all. Choose a smaller plate during a large meal instead, and also make sure to not go back for seconds or thirds. This way you’ll be less likely to feel that uncomfortable sensation of having overeaten.

When the holidays roll around, remember these tips and tricks to avoid overeating. Not only will you enjoy your meals more, but you’ll be able to stick toward your diet and fitness goals all year round.
